The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of being involved.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to ensure his availability for the contest.

He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
