Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
