British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," he added. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack killed two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
